VIVAnews - Center of Volcanology Research and Technological Developments (BPPTK) of Yogyakarta warns the residents in the area that local rainfalls throughout the week may result in cold lava flood.
"Local downpours on the peak of Mount Merapi may cause cold lava flood to hit the area," said BPPTK Head, Subandriyo, today.
The most anticipated flood-prone area lies on the western part of the volcano on Putih, Apu, Pabelan and Krasak rivers.
"The cold lava flood indeed threatens the western part of Merapi," he said.
The early warning system that the authorities installed to monitor cold lava flood can provide BBPTK with decent pictures from surveillance cameras.
"Unfortunately, most sand miners operating along the rivers ignore the warning being given," he said.
